What this usually involves
Most geyser call-outs turn out to be one of four things: a failed element, a dead thermostat, a leaking pressure valve, or a cylinder that has actually rusted through. The first three are a repair. Only the last one is a replacement, and it is worth knowing which you are being quoted for.
A replacement should still comply with SANS 10254, but since 24 June 2022 a Certificate of Compliance is no longer a national requirement for geyser work. Some municipalities still call for one by by-law, and insurers usually want one before they pay out a claim, so ask for it anyway.
If it is currently coming through the ceiling: close the geyser's isolator valve and switch it off at the DB board, then call. That stops the damage getting worse while somebody is on the way.

What decides the price
Nobody can price a plumbing job off a phone call, and anyone who gives you a firm number before seeing it is guessing. What they can do is tell you what moves it. This is what actually decides the figure on your quote.
