How much is a plumber's call-out fee?
Each plumber sets their own, and it moves with the time of day. Ask what it is before anybody drives out, and whether it comes off the bill if you go ahead with the work.
Why there is no rand figure here
Each plumber we work with prices their own jobs, and the one who takes yours quotes before any work starts. We are not going to copy a figure off another website or an industry average instead. You would plan around it, and it would not be the price of your job.
What we can tell you is what moves the price and what to ask, so the quote you get makes sense and two quotes can be compared.
The longer answer
A call-out fee pays for the plumber getting to you and looking at the problem. Some take it off the bill if you go ahead with the work, some charge it either way. Those are two different prices, so ask which it is.
Emergencies cost more. A burst pipe on a Sunday night is priced differently from the same job on a Tuesday morning. If you can close the water off and it can wait until the morning, say so and ask what that saves.
Through us, plumbers are offered jobs between 07:00 and 19:00. A job that comes in at night is logged and goes out first thing in the morning, so close the water off and message us anyway.
What decides the price
| Anything after hours | A Sunday night call-out costs more than a Tuesday morning one, everywhere, always. If it can wait until the morning, say so and ask what that saves. |

Ask before they start
- Is there an after-hours or weekend rate, and from what time?
- Is travel charged on top?
- If you only look and I do not go ahead, what do I pay?
- Is the call-out charged separately, and does it come off the bill if I go ahead?
- Is that including VAT?
- Is this a fixed quote or an estimate that can move once you open it up? If it can move, by how much?
- Are you supplying the parts, and what is the guarantee on them?
- Will I get a Certificate of Compliance, and is it in the price?
Questions people ask
What is the average call-out fee for a plumber in Johannesburg?
Each plumber sets their own, so an average would not tell you what yours will charge. Ask for the call-out fee before anybody drives out, whether it is higher after hours, and whether it comes off the bill if you go ahead.
How much should I pay for an emergency plumber?
More than for the same job in working hours, because night and weekend rates are higher. Agree the call-out fee and the rate on the phone before they come, and get the repair quoted before they start it. If you can close the water off, ask what waiting for the morning saves.
