How much does it cost to replace a geyser?

Most of the price comes down to whether you need a new geyser at all. A failed element, thermostat or valve is a repair. Only a cylinder that has rusted through is a replacement, and the plumber should tell you which before quoting.

Why there is no rand figure here

Each plumber we work with prices their own jobs, and the one who takes yours quotes before any work starts. We are not going to copy a figure off another website or an industry average instead. You would plan around it, and it would not be the price of your job.

What we can tell you is what moves the price and what to ask, so the quote you get makes sense and two quotes can be compared.

The longer answer

A replacement quote has two parts: the geyser itself, and the work of fitting it. Ask to see them as separate lines. That is true for a 150 litre geyser or any other size. The size and make set what the cylinder costs. The fitting moves with access and with what around the geyser has to be replaced.

A replacement should still comply with SANS 10254, but since 24 June 2022 a Certificate of Compliance is no longer a national requirement for geyser work. Some municipalities still call for one by by-law, and many insurers still ask for one before they pay out a claim, so ask whether it is in the price.

If it is coming through the ceiling right now, close the geyser's isolator valve and switch it off at the DB board before you think about the price. That stops the damage getting worse.

What decides the price

GeyserWhich part failed. A dead element, thermostat or pressure valve is a repair; only a cylinder that has rusted through is a replacement, and the difference between those two is most of the price. After that: the size, whether it is in the roof or a cupboard, and whether the tray, vacuum breakers and pipework have to be brought up to SANS 10254 while they are in there.
InsuranceA burst geyser is normally covered under household buildings insurance, but many insurers send their own approved plumber or want to approve yours first, and your excess still applies. Phone the claims line before anything is replaced.

Ask before they start

  1. Which part has failed, and can you show me?
  2. Is the geyser priced separately from the fitting?
  3. What size and make is the new geyser, and what is its guarantee?
  4. Is taking away the old geyser in the price?
  5. Will I get a Certificate of Compliance, and is it in the price?
  6. Is the call-out charged separately, and does it come off the bill if I go ahead?
  7. Is that including VAT?
  8. Is this a fixed quote or an estimate that can move once you open it up? If it can move, by how much?
  9. Are you supplying the parts, and what is the guarantee on them?

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to replace a geyser?

It depends on the size and make of the new geyser, where it sits, and what around it has to be replaced to meet SANS 10254. Check first that you need a replacement at all: a failed element, thermostat or valve is a repair. Then ask for the geyser and the fitting to be quoted separately.

How much does a 150L geyser cost?

The cylinder's price depends on the make and where it is bought, and it is only part of the bill. The fitting, the drip tray, valves and any pipework come on top. Ask the plumber to list the geyser and the fitting as separate lines so you can see both.

How much do plumbers charge to install a geyser?

Each plumber prices the fitting their own way, and it moves with access, whether the geyser is in the roof or a cupboard, and what has to be brought up to standard while it is open. Ask for a fixed quote, and whether a Certificate of Compliance is included.
